Barnes Lake (Paradise) Warm Springs

These springs are located on the north side of the Stikine River, roughly 2 kilometres west of the Canada-US border, according to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. They’re rarely visited and aren’t encouraged because they’re not hot and difficult to find. Burns Lake can be reached by water if you have a kayak or a boat with a very small keel.

You should be able to get directions from the Tongass National Forest office in Wrangell or a local tour company. Walk east-northeast for about 500 metres to the springs from Burns Lake’s east end. Spending some time looking for a path could be advantageous. The Springs are difficult to locate, and the dense vegetation and odourless water make the search even more difficult. The two strings run parallel to the valley’s little creek.

The main spring empties into a tiny pool near the bottom of the hill. On the west side of the stream, I have an oddly shaped plot of land. The temperature of the water from the mainspring is said to be below 25 degrees Celsius. The other spring, about 600 feet upstream, is 27 degrees Celsius and comes from mud at the base of a rocky cliff. If you ever decide to go, please send us some images.
